Giveaway: The midwinter cold and flu package.

It’s been an odd winter, uber-balmy in some areas and freaky cold in others (hello, Fairbanks!). But colds and other bugs are not choosy about where they set up shop.

With this week’s giveaway, you’ll be ready.

The winner will receive:

  • Robitussin Peak Cold (cough and chest congestion formula)
  • Advil Congestion Relief a non-drowsy product (in case you can’t take to your bed) that includes ibuprofen
  • Two kinds of Ricola: sugar-free lemon mint throat drops and “dual action” lozenges that treat both coughs and sore throats
  • Celestial Seasonings fruit-herbal teabags (raspberry, blueberry, peach, wild berry, black cherry/berry), because hot tea is just so soothing
  • A copy of “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” — if you can take to your bed, this is a delightful read to take with you

I hope none of you actually needs this package. However, a little preparation comes in handy if someone in your home does come down with the crud. If you’ve ever had to drag your sickly self to the nearest store in search of expectorants and analgesics, you know what I mean.

Warning: The “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” series is widely known to be habit-forming.

To enter:

If you do any (or all!) of these things, please leave separate, additional comments to get credit for each entry.

The deadline is 9 p.m. PST Monday, Feb. 6. If I do not hear back from the winner by Wednesday night, I will choose another name.

Something I hope not to use, but good to have on-hand because I (or someone here in the house) will probably need at some point this winter.

  11. Donna, I’m way ahead of you on this one. We have an entire cabinet dedicated to the cold fighting essentials. Much of the booty is left over from our daughter’s days at university. Either she didn’t get sick much, or didn’t take the remedies when she needed them :)
    Stay well, Barb

  12. Wow this would be a good way to help fight the crud and one that i hope to NOT have to use, lol!

  13. An ounce of prevention… and I may be one of the few who hasn’t read that series. (Yes, the library has it… so many books, so little time!)

As always, thanks for the giveaway!

I read with interest and appreciation your article including the bit about scraping off burnt toast. You went on a bit about what to do with the ‘heel’ of a loaf of bread and followed with some very good suggestions.

Here’s my two cents worth. It’s a little known fact that the ‘heel’ of a loaf of bread actually has the best nutrition content of any slice in the loaf. It is really dumb to throw it away or misuse it by soaking up the grease at the bottom of a meatloaf.

Save up a few heels. Make a batter of eggs, milk and cinnamon. Soak each heel in the batter until it is soggy. Cook in a fry pan over medium heat until browned on each side. Serve with honey or maple syrup and wash down with hot chocolate. You will be enjoying some of the finest french toast in your life’s experience.

    Bon Appetit

  88. I just retired from the post office and know of the value of the flat rate box -especially to Alaska! Big savings from the large flat rate size. My brother lived in Seward and we are in the Midwest-so many boxes were sent back and forth. Loved getting items from Alaska and was fortunate to visit him twice -now he is near Seattle.Love reading your email every day!
