Giveaway: “I got canned” edition.

thBy rights, I should be giving away cans of something in honor of my having gotten canned.

But they’re a pain in the neck to mail, and I’m too frazzled* to write up giveaways for the other items I have. So let’s go with gift cards.

I’m giving away two $10 Amazon cards this week. Why two? Why not.

You can always use the cards to buy something canned online.

To enter:

If you do any (or all!) of these things, please leave separate, additional comments to get credit for each entry.

The deadline is 7 p.m. PDT Tuesday, Sept. 17. If I don’t hear back from the winners by 7 p.m. PDT Wednesday, Sept. 18, I’ll pull two other names.

*Re being frazzled: I’m spending a lot of time dealing with the fallout from the layoff. Interesting possibilities are opening up; if I choose to do any of them, I’ll eventually share details.

  2. I have a 99% probability of being forced into retirement in the next 3 weeks. But hey, life is good. I’m looking at the positive side. I can become on of those Ladies who never wear a watch because their life isn’t driven my meetings, deadlines, and conference. Lose the stress induced cortisol related tummy. And that pinched look between the eyes that turns permanent on some people. I’m going to plant a garden, go to the gym,Wesr funny hats and bright flowery prints from Lilly Pulitzer because they are fun.

    • Try it, you’ll like it. Got pushed out of job market about 5 years ago. Try to get over the insult and have fun. I am captain of our Volunteer Fire Team, and I spend a lot of time in my community otherwise causing trouble. Didn’t have time when I was working FT. Good luck.

  5. Cause you know Amazon is my favorite place to shop!

Sorry about the canning…trite words, but it’ll work out. Best wishes, thinking of you, and I’m sure it will be better than ever. Sounds like you’re onto something already.

  6. I have been “canned” myself. It’s very scary but it can also been an adventure onto something new. With your experience, your new freedom will bring all of us more insights and wisdom I am sure.

  8. I survived a “lay off” from the job of my dreams at age 64. THEN I discovered “Surviving and Thriving on 12K.” And I did survive, in many respects thanks to you and your column. Being a frugalist at heart (as well as our shared survival of those Philadelphia Inquirer machos)will always steel our resolve to move forward with gusto. Now living on less than one half of my former income, I hope to win one of the cards to pass on to a friend who is homeschooling her mix of 5 children and grandchildren.

  10. I don’t know….I think rather than being canned I’d rather be potted….or maybe you should have gotten potted before getting the canned news….lol
At any rate, you’ll be fine. The cream always rises to the top! 😉

  15. Honestly Donna, it’s their loss. And remember, as my wonderful sister Ivy says, “I’m a wonderful person”. And the other portion of her comment is too crude for this site.

I suggest you do this: call/contact all of your family, friends and neighbors and tell them you are having a canned food drive because you got canned. Have it last about 10 days so it does not drag out, and so that it gives people ample opportunity to participate (waiting for paychecks, sales, dble cpns and such). Then stack it all up, take pictures, and write about it. And be sure to include in your article who it was that canned you. EX: MSN caused me to collect 1000 cans. I know; I have a sick mind.

  18. Sorry about your job. I only went over there because of you and lately the other articles have not been inspiring. I’ll have to check out the other site you write for.

  19. Donna,

You’ve overcome so much more than MSN, you got this life change. Your articles have inspired and educated so many people and being canned by MSN can’t and will not change that.

Enjoy the time and investigate your other opportunities – – they are out there and waiting on you!!!!

    Stay frugal my friends!!!

  20. Donna, I am sorry this happened to you but it is their loss. I too, know you will continue on to something else. When one door closes, another door opens, usually to bigger and better things. It’s all part of the bigger plan. We will all be there to watch and see what wonderful things are in store for you. Hopefully, it continues to include something online so we can all follow along. You make our days a little bit brighter by sharing your stories and wisdom. I certainly appreciate you. Take care, Melissa

  21. Well, I’ve been canned before and I have to say it was an opportunity I’m happy to have had. Otherwise I might have stayed right there for much too long. Anyway, thanks for the giveaway. I always love a chance to win an Amazon gift card.

  23. Donna, I’ve been there twice and I have done better than those who thought they knew what they were doing when they said I was “too expensive”. You will, too because you are so talented, and a survivor and thriver!! I subscribe to your musings via email and always would appreciate an Amazon gift card. Smile!!

  24. I feel for you! My husband was laid off at the end of June, and he’s still looking for work. I haven’t worked for a handful of years for various reasons, but I am throwing my hat in the ring. I hope this opportunity brings you happiness and success. We sure have learned several things about ourselves and started working smarter toward our goals as a result of this opportunity.

  25. So sorry to hear about the loss of that particular job, but I know something probably even better will come along soon for you. We also recently had a “pink slip” experience in our family and it was a shock — now we’ll be using even more of the skills you’ve taught us!
