What I’ve been doing.

thMade it back from the annual Talkeetna fling late Sunday afternoon, in one piece but very tired. Either I’m getting older or the late hours, odd eating habits and weirdly crappy weather (freezing rain despite ground temps in the 20s) took more out of me than I thought.

Before I recap that bacchanal, allow me to share a few recent happenings.

Despite my previously stated position on why you shouldn’t write for free, I recently did just that. But donating “Want to cut costs? Get yourself a frugal filter (or two)” to the Wise Bread blog was a professional courtesy, which is one of the few reasons to give it away. Will Chen and Greg Go have both been helpful and supportive to me and I wanted to return the favor.

Speaking of Wise Bread: My daughter recently published a post there called “The ultimate guide to cash-back shopping,” which is just what it sounds like. If you have questions about how to get rebates on an astounding array of purchases, follow that link. All will be revealed.

Oversexed feral turkeys

My most recent post at Money Talks News is “Talking turkey: Fun facts about the Thanksgiving feast.” Sound a little too holiday-specific for you? Fine. Be that way. That is, if you don’t care to learn things like why oversexed feral turkeys are terrorizing Staten Island or where the original green bean casserole recipe is now housed. (Hint: It isn’t at Plymouth Rock.)

If you’re starting to feel a bit of the pre-Christmas crazies, check out my current post on Behind the Blue (the Valpak blog). “Beat holiday stress with a ‘holidate’” points out that the holidays – despite their happy basis – can do a number on your nerves, and suggests nine ways to take a break without breaking the bank.

I was delighted to be chosen for this week’s Carnival of Personal Finance. In fact, “The gift of personal finance” is an Editor’s Pick. Thanks to Lance of the Money Life and More blog for hosting. As usual with these blog carnivals you’re liable to discover new sites you might never have found on your own, so take a look.

(My daughter’s in the same carnival, with a post called “Grinchy giving.”)

Another of my posts, “Good to the last drop: Getting full use of condiments,” made it into a blog carnival called the Festival of Frugality. It’s hosted this week by Digital Personal Finance.

Finally, you have until 7 p.m. PST on Tuesday, Dec. 10 to enter to win a $25 card to either Amazon, Walgreens, CVS or Starbucks via this week’s giveaway, sponsored by Gift Card Granny. Any of those cards could help prop up your shopping budget or your treat-yourself budget. Or just use the Starbucks one to take someone on one of those holidates.

  1. Looking forward to reading some of the great posts by you and your daughter that you mentioned and really looking forward to hearing about The Talkeetna Bachelor Auction & Wilderness Woman Competition! I remember reading about it last year and smiling the whole time!!

  2. I got my first $25 Swagbucks Amazon gift card to use this Christmas (do not spend that much time on there, so it was a big treat for me to redeem my prize!) Can’t wait for the Talkeetna report.

    • That was us a week ago, except our high was about 3 degrees. I’d rather have cold than this nasty sluck all over the streets.

  4. Ahh, getting older. While I can still do everything I used to do, I,also, can be more exhausted by the end of the day. A gift card for Starbucks would help–a little java in the mid-afternoon!

  5. An Amazon gift card would especially make my day, but I was happy to win a card even when I was too late to claim the prize! (Go figure.)
