Free PSA and TSH tests this weekend. Two small bits of news, too.

thSam’s Club is at it again, offering free health testing at all stores with pharmacies. This time they’ve got something specifically for the guys.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, men can get a free prostate specific antigen (PSA) test. This screening can help identify cancer early on, long before any symptoms show up.

One in six men over 50 years of age will develop prostate cancer. It’s one of the most common types of cancer affecting men in the United States – and one of the leading causes of death in that group.

Women can get their thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels checked, to look for signs of under- or overactive thyroid. Both can cause an assortment of health issues. I can vouch for this one: Back in 2008 I was just crawling through the days but assumed my hectic schedule (middle-aged college student, apartment house manager, MSN Money blogger) was to blame.

That was part of it, but a sub-par thyroid was the rest of it. A low-dose synthetic hormone (generic, of course) has made all the difference in the world.

Also up for grabs are blood pressure check, vision test and body mass index measurement. You don’t need to be a Sam’s Club member to take advantage of these free tests.

In other news…

My article “A satisfied life” was an Editor’s Pick in the Carnival of Personal Finance over at Planting Our Pennies. Thanks for the shout-out, PoP.

Entering blog carnivals was one of the things that fell by the wayside when I was so busy. I’d like to get back into this again. They’re a great chance learn about sites that you might not find on your own – and, of course, being selected is a sensational boost to one’s ego.

Finally: I had the distinct pleasure recently of getting an invitation to SaveUp13, a three-day conference sponsored by Savings.com. I’ve attended in the past but not for a couple of years now. It will be fun to get together and talk about money-saving ideas with a bunch of like-minded writers.

Bonus: The previous two conferences yielded interesting grab-bags of items to give away on my site. Wondering what will be available this year – but whatever it is had better be sturdy because the conference takes place in early August. In Orlando. Just typing those words made me sweat.

  1. Congrats on the “a satisfied life” piece honors. And while we’re on the subject of health…any resources you know of concerning the up coming Obamacare start up. It is my understanding this thing is ready to take off pretty soon BUT there is very little info about it. Seems crazy to me as this is the biggest change in healthcare since Medicare and there’s very little info….IMHO…well that’s just crazy. Your help, as always, is appreciatted….and who knows it might make for an interesting piece…

  2. Congrats! I will be in Orlando early August as well doing the theme park thing. Bring lots of stuff to hold your hair up and away from your face. Do not bring jeans. Jeans are useless and become downright gross in humidity and/or puddles. If you have to dress professionally, this is the time to wear skirts- knee-length or shorter. Right now, a really big trend is sheer blouses over camisoles. Get them. They are amazing and help SO MUCH with the heat and the humidity. I hope this trend never ever ends.
