Giveaway: Artisanal chocolate from Alaska.

Not everyone gets a Valentine’s Day treat from a loved one. In fact, some of us don’t particularly want them. Still, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel a little bit special, so I’m having another Chugach Chocolates giveaway. If you didn’t get a Valentine, then treat yourself (or someone else) to this one.

Chugach Chocolates is a “bear-to-bar” that creates delicious (and sometimes scary-sounding) items here in Anchorage. Right down the street from us, in fact, which is particularly dangerous since they’ve opened a nice little coffee shop/retail space.

Since DF’s doctor wants him to eat an ounce of dark chocolate per day, we decided to support the local economy and buy solely from Chugach Chocolates. Happily, they offer a volume discount so we’ve taken to buying a dozen bars at a clip. It’s a health issue, you see.

About the “scary-sounding” chocolates: We’ve found that you don’t need to be afraid of confections such as Alaskan Kelp and Cayenne or Mat-Su Valley Potato Chip chocolate bars. They’re all good. Well, except for the Espresso Beans bars – I’ve never been a coffee fan. DF loves them, though.

The winner of this giveaway gets to choose from among:

8-Piece Tasting Pack: A collection of one-by-one inch pieces of Alaskan Birch Syrup Toffee, Alaskan Kelp and Cayenne (really – don’t be scared!), Espresso Beans, Prince William Sound Sea Salt, Pink Himalayan Salt, Mat-Su Valley Potato Chips (the chips are made from Alaska spuds grown out in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley), Single Origin Fiji and Single Origin Madagascar.

Chocolate 101 Flight Tasting Kit: This is a chance to impress your friends, or just to spend an evening learning about why chocolate tastes so good. The kit has two 1.75-oz. bars (Dark Chocolate with Alaskan Birch Toffee, Prince William Sound Sea Salt) and one .88-oz Single Origin Dark Chocolate bar. To make sure you’re doing it right, you’ll also get three tasting sheets and tasting sheet instructions.

Chocolate 201 Flight Tasting Kit. This one has a trio of single-origin bars (likely from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Fiji, depending on availability), along with three tasting sheets and tasting sheets.

Chocolate for grownups

These fancy treats also make a good Easter gift for someone special, a hostess gift if you’re invited somewhere or a fun confection to share with guests after Easter dinner. Easter is early this year – March 31 – so see if you can hang on to the candy until then. Some people do have self-control.

Don’t waste them on five-year-olds, though. Most little kids prefer a sweeter chocolate, and even if they like the dark stuff they’re more likely to gulp it down and ask for more than to savor the work that went into these fine chocolates. Get them some Hershey’s Kisses and leave the good stuff for the grownups.

  1. Please enter my name. I get your emails. Sorry to say, I barely have control when it comes to candy so I don’t keep it in the house often. If I am desperate, I will buy a small size bar once in awhile and bring it home. Sometimes half gets eaten in the car on the way home. After Ash Wednesday, this one church makes the greatest Easter Eggs, and I can’t resist one of each of the two types and I freeze them. Then It is hard because I know they are there!

  9. Chocolate with bear chunks might scare me (I say might) but chocolate with kelp and cayenne actually sounds good. Thanks for doing the giveaway!
