Giveaway: Alaska coffee and chocolate.

We had the itch to get out of town recently, so we spent part of the day in Seward. In part, the trip was to enjoy a nice, relatively warm day and the gorgeous scenery of this small (2,729) city. The drive there was also beautiful, beginning along Turnagain Arm, continuing through Johnson Pass and terminating with knockout views of Resurrection Bay.

The day trip was also specifically designed to spend money. That may sound odd coming from a couple of frugalists, but we have decided to do our part to support the local economy. Did the same thing last month with a trip to Talkeetna, home of the Bachelors Auction and Wilderness Woman Competition.

Not that we broke the bank, mind you. DF had coffee from a little shop called Seward’s Cup (we tipped the barista 100%), and bought a much-needed wallet from the town’s only clothing store. He could have purchased it here in Anchorage, but had decided he would drop a few dollars (29 of them, as it turned out) somewhere else.

We looked in at the shops, soaked in the scenery and watched jellyfish bobbing along the shoreline. Before we left town, we had the World Famous Bucket of Butt for dinner.

That’s “butt” as in “halibut.” True, the spelling isn’t accurate. However, it’s funnier this way. Butts are just funny, no matter how old you get.

And I made it my business to buy something to give away on the website. It wound up being three things, one of which be part of a different giveaway.

This time around, though, it’s Alaska-themed (and produced) coffee and chocolate.

Any takers?

I should caution the easily offended to turn back now. The java in question is from Raven’s Brew Coffee in Ketchikan, Alaska, and it is most definitely NSFW. That’s because it’s called Three-Peckered Billy Goat Coffee, and its motto is “Sup from the cup that keeps you up.” The bag also says, “Crudely named, but aptly famed!”

And yep, there’s an illustration. Because of course there is.

The second item is an Alaska Moka Bar, a collaboration between Theobroma Chocolate Company and Raven’s Brew Coffee. Specifically, it’s a dark chocolate bar “ecstatically enhanced” with finely ground coffee.

It, too, has an illustration: a sourdough, leaping salmon, a grizzly swatting at the fish, a raven, words spelled out with split birch logs…But…Is that other bear holding a coffeepot?

Indeed it is.

  6. I subscribe by email. Great giveaway, as I think most women love coffee and chocolate. Coffee is the first thing I go for in the morning and continue on and off throughout the day.

The pictures of Alaska are really beautiful. I had to go through them all. Can’t seem to get my hubby to want to visit as he isn’t a flight kind of guy, but my cousin went there last year on a cruise and he was raving about it.

  9. Even if I don’t win, thanks for the post today. Husband and I decided getting out was a good idea so we booked a night in Talkeetna. Have lived her 50 years and never been there; I have lived in all sorts of villages and Anchorage and travelled all along the chain, but never stopped at Talkeetna. So, next week we rented a cabin (social distancing and supporting a small business) and plan to eat at Mile High Pizza while there. Cabin fever, be gone!

  11. What a great, upbeat article! Coffee and chocolate, what’s not to love? I just tried the Dunkin Donuts chocolate bars; they taste like the smell of coffee! Now you know I am in trouble; I’ve often said it coffee tasted as good as it smelled, there would be no stopping me and no limits on my consumption. I bought the last five on sale at CVS; must find a new source.

  12. I think I finally talked my husband into visiting Alaska, by telling him I would break up the flight/s, so that we could have some stopovers instead of doing it all in one day and then dying from exhaustion and bad back.
