I wanted to give away some more Alaska-made jewelry for Mother’s Day, but figured I had plenty of time. The other day I realized that the holiday is early this year: May 8. Yikes!
In order to allow a week for the giveaway to simmer, and then a few days to get the pieces mailed plus and a little time for those who don’t win to buy something else for Mom instead, I’m putting the giveaway up now.
Before I talk about the Alaska-made jewelry, though, I want to emphasize that this doesn’t have to be a Mother’s Day thing, for several reasons.
First, not everyone celebrates, because their moms are dead. Others have reasons not to want to give their moms the time of day, let alone a present. (It’s hard, but it happens.)
Finally, some people either believe in experiences rather than Stuff, or have been asked by their moms please not to send them any more Stuff. Clutter is a thing, especially as we age; we want to pare things down, not add to the problem. That’s why this does not have to be a Mother’s Day gift. Take your mom to lunch or gift her a massage, then use the jewelry as a gift for someone’s Confirmation, birthday or, heck, for next Christmas.
You could also choose to keep it, because why not give yourself a little somethin’ sparkly???
But back to the giveaway.
My friend Linda B. became a jewelry artist in midlife, and I’ve given away her works in the past. (Click here for her backstory.) I’ve been focusing on giving away Alaska-made items* lately, and it’s even more satisfying when I actually know the artist.
This time around, I’ll be giving two prizes. The first winner to get back to me gets first pick at either one pendant or three pairs of earrings.
My photography isn’t the best, but I hope it gives readers at least a hint at how much fun these pieces are.
Pendant 1
This is the one featured at the top left. I immediately thought of it as “music lover’s jewelry” because the wire embellishment reminds me of a treble clef.
Pendant 2
I dubbed this one the “steampunk triptych.” Linda does like to pound metal and add rivets to things.
Pendant 3
Beats me why this piece wasn’t chosen in a previous giveaway. If I were the kind of person who wore jewelry, I’d have bought it for myself.
Pendant 4
This one makes me think of a cornucopia.
Earrings 1
These are vintage beads paired with modern crystals. Linda likes to “cannibalize” old jewelry for new looks.
Earrings 2
These glass beads looked dark-green until I put them closer to a light source. They were revealed to be black, and to have etched patterns.
Earrings 3
These are dyed freshwater pearls.
Earrings 4
There’s a subtle sense of motion in these hoops, which are made of very small beads.
Earrings 5
Like things a little more delicate? These florals should do the trick.
Earrings 6
These earrings’ length, shape and embellishment are attention-getting but not visually overwhelming. For some reason, they make me think of hard candies.
Quick ground rules
Again, the first winner to get in touch with me gets the first chance to choose one pendant or three pairs of earrings.
The pendant can be strung on a chain or a cord.
If this is to be a gift, I’d be willing to ship it directly to the recipient if you like. That will save you the expense and hassle of going to the post office. All you’d have to do is tell your mom/grandmom/sister/BFF to watch for a gift in the mail.
Finally: If you’re not chosen as a winner but have fallen in love with a pendant and/or some earrings, I’d be glad to act as go-between for you and Linda. Message me at SurvivingAndThriving (at) live (dot) com and we’ll make it happen. (Unless, of course, those pieces are chosen by the winners.)
