Giveaway: Starbucks gift card and reusable straws.

It’s brutally hot in the Lower 48 right now and I so wish that I could send some of the Alaska coolth down to guys. Unfortunately, I can’t do that. But I can offer up a brief respite, courtesy of a Starbucks gift card and some reusable straws.

Whoever wins this can purchase $15 worth of their favorite cold beverages: stuff like Blended Strawberry Lemonade, Pink Drink, Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew, Iced Chocolate Almond Milk Shaken Espresso, Iced Peach Green Tea Lemonade, Iced Guava Passionfruit or even a Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino.

That last one sounds more like a dessert than a drink, which is where those reusable straws come in. They’re not just reusable straws – they’re reusable spoon straws. You can scoop up the thick cold drinks or the bits of fruit/cookie crumbles that might otherwise get stuck in the straw.

My niece recently became a Pampered Chef consultant and I attended a virtual party out of a sense of auntly duty. But I have to say that some of that stuff looks pretty awesome, and I wound up buying one item as a Christmas gift and one item for me* along with the spoon straws. #SupportingTheFamilyEconomy

It’s a set of four (see illustration), so you and up to three family members/friends can all feel eco-friendly together. The little cleaning brush helps you sluice out those cookie bits, and the carrying bag (not pictured) keeps it all together.

The Starbucks gift card is a good match, I think. While I’m not a coffee drinker, I have to say that Starbucks has at times saved me from melting down during summer travels/conferences. Usually I ask the barista, “What cold drink would you recommend to your mom if she were very overheated and not a fan of coffee, or even mocha?” And they always surprise me with something that I might never have chosen on my own.

Again, wish I could help you Lower 48 folks cool down. This is the best I can do.

How to enter to win

As usual, it’s fairly simple:

Be sure to leave a separate comment for each entry (e.g., “Subscribed via e-mail” or “Follow you on Twitter”).

The deadline to enter is 6 p.m. PDT Thursday, July 8. If I don’t hear back from the winner by 6 p.m. PDT Friday, July 9, I’ll have the random number generator pull a new name.

Note: Due to the high cost of international shipping, this giveaway is limited to residents of the United States.

*It’s for a specific kitchen project, and if it works out I’ll be posting some time in late summer. Fingers crossed.

  1. I am on vacation in a “higher” part of the lower 48 in New Hampshire. It is 53*, has been raining since last night and I am freezing. Tuesday/Wednesday it was in the 90*s. Talk about a mood swing. Our family cabin is a summer place so no furnace but we have a space heater. Thank goodness for that. Starbucks’ Flat White and Nitro Cold Brew are my guilty pleasures. I follow you on Facebook and Instagram and receive your emails. Thanks for a chance at winning.

      • Yup. I remember a visit to Canon Beach in Oregon on a July afternoon about 10 years ago. It was a cold, blustery day and my windbreaker was not up to the task of keeping me warm. I marveled that there were 3 people in the water.
I’ve seen similar sights on the coast in the UK, where folks do not know what a nice beach day is.
        Thank you.

  2. Sweltering here in the upper Midwest and wow, do those icy Starbucks’ drinks sound ideal! The reusable spoon straws are highly creative & would be perfect for thick drinks or smoothies. Thank you for the giveaway, Donna & Happy 4th!

  3. Hot here in PA the past couple weeks. Having a break in the heat for the second day today. Heat starts back up again on Monday. The straws sound like something I could use for the snow balls I like: chocolate or cherry with a scoop of hand dipped vanilla in the middle, with more of the flavored snow ball on top. Not snow cones, not slushees; Snowballs! Snowballs in a cup with a flat bottom, and that are eaten with a spoon!

  4. 55 degrees this morning in Western Massachusetts, and cloudy and dreary looking. Hopefully it will clear up for us a little bit. Love the Pampered Chef products that I have. I’ve collected some of them over many, many years from various parties and hosting of parties. I really like their products, I find them well made and they have lasted me for many, many years.

    • The item I bought as a Christmas gift? It’s going over to my niece today, I’ve decided, so she can use it right away. It’s something she wanted: a whipped-cream maker. Pretty ingenious: a small jar with a plunger that with a minute or so of dedicated pushing turns heavy cream into whipped cream. The silicon cap on the bottom of the jar keeps it from sliding around while you do this, and then becomes the lid on the jar when you refrigerate it.

I’m avoiding whipped cream, dammit, on the advice of my doctor. But who knows? At Thanksgiving perhaps I will accept a teeny bit of Schlagsahne on my pumpkin pie if she offers it.

  5. I’m an email subscriber. You probably already know about this, but when Starbucks runs its online contests with entries based on purchases (at Christmastime, midsummer, Earth Day, etc.), they give you the opportunity to earn two free entries by typing in your contact info and answering a couple of survey questions about their products/services. I’ve earned lots of great prizes that way like free drinks and rewards programs stars.

  6. Hi, Donna. I follow you on the web site. I love reusable straws and yearn for warm summer days that demand iced coffee. For me, that means 70 to 75 degrees, occasionally rising to the upper 70s.

  8. Hey! It has been hot in Fairbanks, too! 89 at our house the other day and 113 in the greenhouse, despite a fan and open doors at both ends. I ended up watering with a hose, overhead, to try and cool the tomatoes down.

    Happy 4th.

    • The Interior gets slammed in winter and summer, that’s for sure.

Your note reminded me of my job in seventh and eighth grade: picking tomatoes in three commercial greenhouses. Doors were always open on both ends and huge exhaust fans ran pretty much constantly. Lord, was it HOT in there…But I was making biiiiig money, baby: $1.35 an hour!

  9. Lucky you without all this heat! I only rarely treat myself to Starbucks because of the cost. When I do though, the chai frappe is excellent! (Like you I don’t drink coffee.)

I have you on FB also.

Also signed up for SOMETHING ages ago, so besides getting your article via email I get another email announcing that same new article.

  12. Easily 90s where I live, and when it’s too hot for coffee for me, I like the iced matcha (green tea). To me, it’s very refreshing and light.
As a Frappachino fan myself, those spoon/straws are necessary! I’ll have to check them out!

I’ve purchased from Pampered Chef to help out friends and one relative consultant and some of their products have been quite useful. The spoons look interesting.

  16. We are looking at 97 degrees today. Not as high as other places, but still very unbearable for me. Anything over 82 is too hot for me. I hope to someday visit Alaska as I have wanted to go since being a teen. Thanks for the giveaway!
