Let’s go to the movies.

th-1The Academy Awards are approaching. How many of the likely-to-be-nominated flicks have you seen?

It’s a little scary how expensive a movie ticket has gotten, yet for some films there’s just nothing like the big screen. This week’s giveaway will give you a head start.

If you win, you’ll get your choice of either a $10 Fandango gift card or a $10 AMC Theatres gift card. That should cover (or nearly cover) the cost of a nighttime screening. Skip the popcorn and go to a matinee or a second-run house and the scrip could pay for two films.

Or maybe more: Here in Anchorage you can visit the Totem 8 for just $3.50 per seat. And I might just do that, since “Guardians of the Galaxy” is still playing there.

To enter:

If you do any (or all!) of these things, please leave separate, additional comments to get credit for each entry.

The deadline is 7 p.m. PDT Tuesday, Jan. 13. If I don’t hear back from the winner by 7 p.m. PDT Wednesday, Jan. 14, I’ll pull another name.

  1. *sigh* Guardians of the Galaxy rocked. I’m more than a little in love with a raccoon.

I’m hoping to see “Into the Woods” this weekend, using my AMC theater passes gained from My Coke Rewards (you are the one who turned me on to that, by the way).

Good luck to everyone in the contest!

  2. Would love to win …. Share your pain as to the price of movie tickets….As for the $3.50 you enjoy in Alaska…not happening in this neck of the woods. Closer to $10 here and if you go to the “Imax”, it gets REAL crazy…Aaaand if you want popcorn and a drink…. liberal financing is available….

  3. I don’t think I’ve been to the movies since we saw Frozen a year ago. I got Guardians of the Galaxy for Christmas, but haven’t watched it yet. We will be seeing the new Star Wars flick late this year, for sure. Thanks for the chance.

  4. Someone else commented they haven’t been out to a movie since Frozen. I had to laugh. That’s the last time I saw a movie in the theater, too. With 4 kids, myself and husband, I nearly had a heart attack at the cash register that day!

  5. The Guardians was a real great movie and enjoy the music. My daughter got me the Cd. I like your advice and would enjoy seeing a movie in the future.

  6. Guardians was the last movie I saw in the theatre – well worth the matinee price!

I keep forgetting that I have 2 free movie ticket cards – I acquired them from the car dealership where I bought my car at the end of August. NOT the most frugal way to get free movie tickets – but I bought my car on Friday, and Friday night received an email from the dealership saying “if you do a test drive this weekend, get free movie tickets!” I had to go back in Saturday anyway, so while I was there, I mentioned the email – and that I had bought my car the day before – and they happily gave me the tickets 🙂

  7. Here, the matinees are $10. I love movies and used to go a lot more frequently, but now that it’s so expensive, I mostly refrain. I wait all year to watch movies and then when the Academy Award nominations come out, I try to see as many of the best picture nominees as I can before the ceremony. It’s a major binge, but it’s a special treat I look forward to every year. So far I’ve seen Big Eyes (just ok, but I think Amy Adams is so great) and Boyhood (loved it!)

  8. I follow via email. Want to mention My Points – another great way to get free movie tickets – redeemed points before xmas and received a coupon for 2 movie tickets large popcorn and 2 large drinks for free – we estimated that bill would have been 40 dollars – the staff at movie theater were thoroughly impressed – thanks for the great blogs!

  9. I’m pretty sure I’m out of the loop because I’ve never heard of Guardians of the Galaxy. I’ll have to look it up. I was lucky enough to go to the movies for my birthday a couple of weeks ago.

  10. I love going to the movies anytime but January and February are my favorite movie months. Great way to chase away the winter blues!

  11. My husband and I saw “Into the Woods” using MCR certificate the weekend it opened. Because it was opening weekend it still cost us $3.50 but that was well below the $35 it would have cost us, matinee price, here in Atlanta. We had buried the certificate somewhere on his desk and turned it up by accident. It had been there for at least a year. Money and time keep us away from the movies too often.

The certificate gave us 2 free drinks too. I don’t drink soda so I declined. Because it would have messed up their system, apparently, they stacked two cups together for my husband’s drink so they could ring in the two free. Really!

  12. Never heard of that movie either. Haven’t been to the movies in a few years because there is always something else we can use that money for. Don’t think we have an AMC around our area any more, but the Fandango sounds good.

  13. ok -for cheapo movies I buy discount movie gift cards, go before 5pm (for the cheaper price) and bring my special” move purse’ which conveniently fits a bag a popcorn and a bottle of water.
now winning an amc gift card would just be the cherry on top!

  15. My husband hates going to the movies because of the cost, but recently we went to a cheap matinee & he commented how much he enjoyed it & it didn’t cost an arm & a leg. I would love to win & take him to another matinee. Thank you for all your posts they are so very helpful and encouraging.

  17. I love going to the movies but it is really expensive. We always go in the afternoon to cut costs. It also is less busy, so a bit quieter. Good luck to everyone.
