My chance encounter with a Scotsman.

I’m writing this from the Westminster Reference Library in London, because I needed a quiet place to work. I have another MSN Money deadline and the hostel’s “common room” is too noisy even when I’m wearing earplugs.

Because I didn’t trust the very vague directions given by the hostel staff, I asked a man on the street for help. After a couple of false starts he realized he could go there but he couldn’t tell me how to go there – so he walked me over.

We chatted while we walked. He turned out to be an actor from Perth, Scotland, in town to audition for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s upcoming production of both Henry plays.

I asked which Henry he wanted to be, and he said he was actually reading for the Duke of Westmoreland.

Not to carry the starving-artist and cheap-Scotsman stereotypes too far, but he rode down on the Megabus overnight, carrying a bag full of sandwiches, and he will go back this evening.

Having just been on the Megabus myself, from Cardiff, I could identify. Wish I’d thought to inquire how much he paid for the 10-hour journey. If the answer had been “one pound” I might have asked him to marry me. He had a lovely voice and was an interesting conversationalist plus he got me to this library, where I am pirating wifi from a nearby hotel. Bless his frugal heart and also the Radisson’s, too, for not password-protecting its signal.

You meet the most interesting people if you’re not afraid to ask a stranger for directions. Fortunately, I get lost a lot.

  1. Very fortunate to run into such a kind person who actually took you to your destination. And a frugalist at that! 🙂

Loving these stories. Thanks for sharing them.

  2. I find that strangers, when one is travelling, are so friendly and helpful. I love being a tourist as everything is different and fresh and new and so are the people.

  3. My, my, my….chance encounters now? This IS getting interesting. And, an intriguing title for the post. Yes, I never can remember directions and always have to accompany men to their destination. Maybe you will find an English equivalent to your Alaskan adventure/festival.

  4. Aye, a lovely Scotsman is a nice addition to any home. Just be sure he has a kilt and knows how to wear it properly!
