The random number generator chose Deedee as the lucky recipient of the soap-and-germ package. Yes, she gets her very own stuffed cootie to go with all that laundry detergent and softener.
It occurred to me, belatedly, that the little guy’s picture might be available on the Internet somewhere. It was:
I recently attended a barbecue that was wryly dubbed “Grill, baby, grill!” by its hosts. As I was leaving they gave me a small sack of newly cut rhubarb. Alaskans are nuts about the stuff. In the old days, rhubarb was the first fresh food of the year. To the pioneers it must have tasted positively ambrosial after a winter of sourdough bread and boiled beans.
Modern-day sourdoughs can get all the fresh produce they want at Costco, yet they maintain an ancestral fondness for this vegetable that masquerades as a fruit. Even people who don’t eat it grow it, probably because it takes no horticultural talent at all. Stick a rhubarb root into dry cat litter and by morning you’ll have enough stalks to bake a pie. (Stick it in used cat litter and you’ll have enough for two pies.)
Alas, it’s not another $100 Amazon gift card. I wish I could give away one of those every week (and keep a few for myself).
However, it is a $10 head start on something you want — and it comes with chocolate!

I’ve got it: A cute puppy!
We have a winner! Two of them, in fact. The “Carrie necklace” goes to Tania, whose name comes in well under the allotted 12 letters. She’ll be the envy of all the other girls (and not a few of the boys) if she wears it to “Sex and the City 2.”
The confectionery consolation prize winner is Catseye. As we all know, confections have a stupendous capacity to console. In this case, that’s a bag of Godiva milk chocolate strawberries and two Godiva bars (milk chocolate with almond, dark chocolate with extra-dark ganache filling).
Congratulations to both, and as for the rest of you: Suck it up. I wasn’t even eligible to win and you don’t hear me whining, do you?
