Anatomy of a frugal meal.

It was close to suppertime, and no supper was in sight. We had three or four ounces of leftover pork tenderloin, bought deeply discounted and frozen until needed. I thought to slice it thinly, cook some rice and steam some peas from last year’s garden.

That would have been okay, but dull. Instead, I started pulling things out of the freezer:

A bag of chopped celery, also from last year’s garden

A bag of chopped red and yellow peppers, bought from the produce manager’s “ugly but still good” shelf

A bag of chopped onions – DF recently noticed an onion was starting to rot, so he cut and froze the still-good parts

A bit of turkey fat, from a bird we cooked a couple months ago; we save the fat from all pan juices, for cooking vegetables and making white sauce

Next, I put on a pot of rice (bought by the 50-pound bag at Costco) and melted the turkey fat, announcing that I planned to caramelize the vegetables and then add the diced tenderloin and some kind of sauce. DF diced the meat, then thinly sliced some carrots while I considered potential sauce ingredients.

What immediately jumped to mind was a bottle of General Tso’s sauce that I’d gotten free from our neighborhood’s Buy Nothing Facebook group. I poured maybe four tablespoons into a glass measuring cup, along with some rice vinegar (from an ancient bottle lurking in the lazy Susan) and a shake of powdered garlic (another Costco buy).

The slowly cooking onions, peppers, celery and carrot were making the kitchen smell divine. Maybe this olfactory distraction was what caused me to overdo the vinegar somewhat. It didn’t quite drown out the General Tso’s, but it didn’t do the sauce any favors, either. A few splashes from a jug of Langer’s pineapple-orange-guava juice (bought on sale, with a coupon) brought the vinegar into line and added a sweet hint of citrus.

“Stealth stock-up”: A budget saver.

Food prices rose 8.8 percent between March 2021 and March 2022 – and the latest wrinkle is a mix of labor issues and “idle trains,” according to Reuters.

One way to fight food inflation is to stock your pantry and freezer with the most affordable food you can find today, before prices go up tomorrow.

Not everyone can afford to buy a side of beef or 50 pounds of pinto beans all at once.  But a tactic I call “stealth stock-up” just might save your food budget.

It’s pretty simple: Watch the sales flyers, and when your favorite brand** of pasta or cereal or tuna goes on sale, buy two instead of one. Buy three, if you can swing it.

That’s not to say you can’t also stock up on non-sale items, especially if they’ve been hard to get due to supply-chain issues. But the idea is to stretch available dollars and stash as much food as you can. Sale prices let you do both.

Already shopping this way? That doesn’t surprise me, since frugal people tend to read this site. It just makes sense to pay less.

We save money on bread by making our own, with flour and yeast bought in bulk at Costco. Each time, DF writes the date and the price paid on the bag. (He saves those 50-pound sacks to use as yard waste receptacles.)

That’s how we know that between March 2021 and March 2022, the price went up 51.5 percent. In one year! And that’s why I suggested an article for Money Talks News called “13 ways to beat the rising cost of bread.”

This baker’s dozen of ideas includes our rustic bread fetish, of course. It also features tips for those who don’t bake. One or more of these tips could help you save money on bread, too, so check it out.

Note: Some of my recent work is either fairly boring (useful, but eye-glazing) or else it’s unsigned. Vernal equinox: The (cold) shoulder season.

Happy first day of spring, also known as the vernal equinox! Doesn’t our yard look…equinoctical?

At left is a view of our snow-covered garden, shot through the living-room window. The cage at the back surrounds our two apple trees, which look spindly now but will produce a startling amount of fruit once summer arrives.

Summer will arrive again, right? At this time of year it’s easy to second-guess the seasons. Yesterday it sure felt like spring, hitting 47 degrees – and on a day when the sun didn’t set until 8:14 p.m., it was easy to imagine that the best season had somehow sneaked up on us. That is, until I had to tippy-toe down our partially glaciated driveway to check the mailbox.

We mostly refer to spring as “breakup,” as in ice breaking up on a river or lake. Indeed there are huge puddles during the day as winter’s accumulation starts to disappear. But there’s still a lot of snow left, and we are ready for it to be gone.

No- or low-spend February: How did it work for you?

Week 4 of the no- or low-spend February has come and gone – long gone, sorry about that – and what I suspected was true: Most of the readers of this site are already frugal. But just about all of us need a reminder now and then to spend intentionally. Even diehard frugalists can backslide.

During the no- or low-spend February, I was:

Not tempted to buy clothes, because I dislike shopping.

Not needing to buy books; instead, I went to the library (or to our own bookshelves) for reading material. I also chipped away at a backlog built up courtesy of the Amazon First Reads program, in which Amazon Prime members get a free e-book (sometimes two) each month. (As an Amazon affiliate, I may receive a small fee for items bought through my links.)

Able to hit the movies without paying cash, thanks to discounted gift cards I bought last December. I stretched those cards further by going on pay-one-price Tuesday and using my Cinemark Movie Club membership to get 25% off refreshments; it also brings the ticket cost down to $5.

Staying home due to lousy weather. We had snow, then a chinook brought in warm temps and rain, then cold temps that froze all the melt into peaks and valleys, then lots more snow, and just blech blech blech. Although I have wonderful Icebug shoes and the car has studded tires, I just did not feel like setting out across the frozen wastes. If I’m home, I have no opportunity to spend.

Focusing on  no- or low-spend February. Although I technically could have spent money, I had a specific reason not to do so. Taking a sharper look at how (and why) we’re spending is good for us, and good for our financial goals.

The Saver’s Credit: An overlooked tax boost.

Need help saving for retirement? The Saver’s Credit can be a big help. Millions of taxpayers are eligible for this tax credit. Far too few of them know it.

According to a new survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, just 48 percent of us know about the Saver’s Credit, also known as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit.

“The Saver’s Credit may help make it easier for people to save because it lowers their federal income tax,” says Catherine Collison, the CEO and president of the Transamerica Institute.

It’s a non-refundable tax credit that could be applied up to the first $2,000 of contributions made to a traditional or Roth IRA, an ABLE account (for people with disabilities), or a 401(k), 403(b) or similar employer-sponsored plan.

“Non-refundable” means that the credit can’t be more than a filer’s federal income tax that year.  The maximum is $1,000 for individual filers and $2,000 for married couples if they file jointly. 

Eligibility is based on age, dependency status and income. More people might be eligible for the Saver’s Credit this year due to pandemic-related employment issues. Here’s how to find out if you’re eligible.

No/low-spend February: Week 3.

I’m running a little behind on the no- or low-spend February updates. Sorry about that. Sure am enjoying everyone’s frugal hacking, though. Shall we begin?

A reader named Ruby trimmed her own hair, to extend the current cut a little longer before her next salon visit. My own recent version of that: I let the beautician-school student cut my hair a little shorter than I’m accustomed to, in order to go longer between trips. 

Ruby has been hanging up her work clothes and smoothing out any wrinkles, which means she can wear them again another day. Doing so means just one load of laundry per week, which saves not just time but also the cost of detergent, water and utilities.

She also noticed a small rip in her husband’s suede house slippers, so she mended it with thread a neighbor once gave her – and that neighbor had inherited the thread from her grandmother. Now her husband’s slippers have a little history behind them, and kudos to Ruby for dealing with the problem while it was still small. 

Ruby reports that her freezer “continues to provide wonderful dividends.” Frozen strawberries (and canned peaches) went into baked oatmeal. Homemade pizza was brightened by chopped red and yellow bell peppers. 

She combined more of those peppers, along with frozen cherry tomatoes, canned organic mushrooms (left over from pizza night), fresh onions and on-sale-plus-coupon sausage to make a skillet meal served with rice. And for bonus frugal points: Ruby turned leftovers into brown bag lunches.

The frugal medicine cabinet.

(Happy Throwback Thursday! Now that the no- or low-spend February is underway, I have decided to run a throwback frugality post every Thursday this month. This post originally ran on Oct. 4, 2021. Its topic is timely due to COVID-19, flu-rona, and the usual sniffles being passed around at this time of year.)

What makes a medicine cabinet frugal? I’ll explain some tactics a little later. Right off, though, I would like to gently nag you to do an inventory of your own. Here’s why.

You might get sick. If it’s COVID, then it could be possible to fight this at home. (You might have to if you’re living in a place where they’re rationing healthcare. They’re doing it right now in Alaska.) And if it’s not COVID, then you’ll feel a little more comfortable – or at least a little less horrible – if you have certain OTC items on hand.

You might get stuck. Again, no one can say whether another lockdown will happen. If it does, or if case numbers were scary enough in your area to make you want to stay home, then you’re at the mercy of delivery services. Sure, you could look at their ads and find out whether generic Theraflu is cheaper at CVS than at Kroger. But will you do that? Also, being unable to watch for deals and pick them off, one or two at a time, means you’ll likely pay full retail. Bonus: Not being in-store means not seeing “manager’s special” or “clearance” tags.

You might be strapped. Suppose two members of your household get whatever bug is going around. You’ll be so busy putting cold cloths on foreheads and emptying puke pails that you won’t exactly have time/inclination to rush off to Rite Aid. (Stay home anyway, ya Typhoid Mary!)
