There’s nothing like that new crayon smell.

image_28113631369333217Unless, of course, it’s that new crayon smell paired with new crayon names.

To celebrate the 110th anniversary of the invention of Crayolas, the company asked fans to suggest new monikers for the original eight colors.

And boy, did the fans have fun.

Red is now “ladybug.” Green is “jalapeño.”  Want to know the others? Enter to win them.

You could also learn the other names by visiting the Crayola Facebook fan page, which also happens to be the only place you can buy the Limited Edition Packs – and only while supplies last.

As you can see, they’re packaged in replicas of the 1903 original package, which somberly instructed that they were “for educational color work.” Now that’s old-school.

The Crayola company has donated a couple of packages: One for me to try and one to give away.

When I was a kid I was awestruck by the 64-count box of Crayolas. Not that I ever got one – no one I know had this sort of richness in his life. But in either first or second grade the teacher brought a 64-pack in for her students to use. We were thrilled by the idea of so many choices. Who knew there could be more than one way to see purple or red or blue?

As for the built-in crayon sharpener…Well, to a bunch of rural kids in the early 1960s it was totally cutting-edge technology, so to speak.

Color your world

Even as an adult I love a new box of crayons, their neat points and untorn wrappers. You can draw anything you like and then color it green or orange or sky-blue pink if that’s what you think a tree or a dog or a sunset should look like.

Back in the day teachers tended to chide us if we drew things the “wrong” colors. Tree trunks should be brown, leaves should be green, hair couldn’t be pink. Myself, I think that some days the sky just needs to be plaid. th

Also included in this week’s giveaway is something to use the crayons on: a 224-page coloring and activity book devoted to Clifford the Big Red Dog. Believe it or not, Clifford is now 50 years old. Happy anniversary to him (and my best wishes to his owners, who must have had some serious backyard scooping issues).

I haven’t tried my Crayolas yet. They’ll be saved for a trip to the East Coast that I’ll be making with my two nephews (aka the staff of Café Awesome) and their mom. There is no easy or comfortable way to get from Anchorage to Philadelphia, so I am compiling a small bag of distractions for when the novelty of the Digi-Players wears off and they realize just how tired they are of being on a plane.

All I can say is that they better be willing to share, especially since I’ve been hitting the “value priced” section at JoAnn’s Fabrics with those 50%-off Sunday coupons in hand. If we can’t take turns with the Peanuts, Angry Birds and Hello Kitty coloring/activity books, their mom will put all three of us in a time-out.

If you do any (or all!) of these things, please leave separate, additional comments to get credit for each entry.

The deadline is 7 p.m. PDT Tuesday, June 18. If I don’t hear back from the winners by 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, I’ll pull another name.

  3. I love crayons and always coveted that 64-count box with the built in sharpener. I don’t think I had one until I was making my own money and could pay for it myself!

  4. I would LOVE new crayons in any color by any name since I now have 5 grands ranging in age from 8 down to 36 hours (newest granddaughter born late Fri afternoon).

Guess my family was MUCH better $$ as I did have the 64 count boxes in the early middle grades.

  5. I love Crayola crayons and I really loved Clifford the big red dog as a kid. I remember my mom trying to skimp out and buy us cheaper crayons and they just were not the same!!!! I am all for being frugal, but don’t mess with my Crayons! LOL! Crossing my fingers for this one!

  7. I agree…there is nothing like that smell of a new box of crayons. When I was a kid, Santa would bring each of us our own 64 count box of Crayola Crayons. So many colors!

  8. The smell of a new box of Crayolas is the “new car smell” for kids of all ages. A box of these with some blank paper and my girls imagination would go wild. My favorite cards are the ones made with these very Crayolas, some construction paper, an open heart and some very unique outlooks on life. Would love to win the “vintage pack” for the G-babies. And the “64 count box w/ sharpener”…it was HUGE and was more than likely the first “status symbol” I experienced….

  13. I still love to color. I always keep a coloring book and crayons at my desk to use when work gets way too stressful. I definitely remember my first (and only) 64 pack of crayolas. My grandmother gave them to me as a gift and I still remember every detail of that moment. Thanks for making me smile!
