Want to go to the movies?

If so, ask South County Girl — she has an extra ticket, now that she’s been declared the winner of the AMC movie giveaway.

This notification is a bit late going up because of Alaska’s long, weird summer twilights. My hostess got home from work at about 9:30 p.m. and we sat around chatting. Eventually I realized it was getting kind of dark and I was kind of tired.

The time? 1:30 a.m.

It had been a long day, made more stressful than it had to be thanks to another of my Mensa moments. About an hour before I had to leave for the airport I took the bus up to drop off a library book and to invoice for my day job from a library computer. (The invoice program needs anew version of Internet Explorer, and we Mac users can’t get it.) I flung the book into the return slot, invoiced in 60 seconds flat, almost ran back to the bus stop (about a 10-minute trot) and just caught the 358 bus.

At home I put the laptop and other things that I wanted to keep close to me into my backpack. One of the other items was an envelope addressed to the landlords, so that I could pay my July rent.

At which point I remembered that my June rent was already in a stamped, addressed envelope. An envelope….that was inside the library book I’d just dropped off.

I’d put it in the book — sticking out, so I’d remember to put it in the mailbox — but it apparently worked its way down inside “Girl In Translation” and out of sight.

Out of sight, out of mind — they don’t call it mentalpause for nothing. I still can’t believe I remembered that I hadn’t mailed it.

When I called the library a staffer checked the book-return slot and confirmed the envelope was there. But she said she could not be responsible for mailing it. That meant another call, to my sister, to ask if she could please go pick it up. My brother-in-law was planning to be in an area very near the library and he volunteered to take care of it. Bless his heart.

South County Girl: I promise not to put the envelope containing your prize into any books.

  1. Wow, if it had a stamp on it already, you’d think the lady at the library could have just put it in the outgoing mail. Not very helpful, but then I guess you can’t count on everybody to be that way.

  2. Thanks Donna!!!

and thanks for the movie tickets! My fiance and I will get a great date night out of them. Money has been tight since he’s been job hunting and it will be nice to go to the theater and see something.

  3. LOL! This reminds me so much of me. As Art often asks me, “How high is your IQ?!”

Glad you made it to AK and ***thank you *** for all the All You magazines!! Unlike your rent check, they made it here with no drama.

    🙂

    • @Harry: On days like that I can hear my brain cells breaking apart. They tinkle like Christmas ornaments crushed under a boot.
I’m glad the magazines got there. Plenty of coupons in there to tide you over until the subscription begins.

    • @Holly Samlan: We call it Craft Disease. As in, “Can’t Remember A (Freakin’) Thing.” It’s an epidemic, I tell you.

  5. MAN…..what a day! Thank goodness that envelope was in the book….otherwise you would have be wondering while traveling….”did I mail it?”….”did I drop it?”….”should I write another one?”. How nice it must be to have such a good sister/family in times like this. Always good hearing about your adventures….
