Win a $100 Amazon card for Black Friday 2011.

Yesterday I went into a drugstore and found several aisles completely stocked for Christmas: lights, ornaments, wrapping paper, toys, candy and, of course, traditional sacred images such as Mickey Mouse wearing a Santa hat. Sigh.

While too-early Christmas marketing and commercialism in general both bug me, I am also practical enough to acknowledge they exist — and to help a reader stretch his/her dollars to the utmost. That’s why I’m happy to announce a giveaway sponsored by the Consumerism Commentary blog: a $100 Amazon gift card, just in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Like it or not, BF and CM are part of the consumer culture. In fact, they’ve produced an heir called “Cyber Week” — deals that start the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

I encourage everyone to click on the link above to visit Consumerism Commentary, for two reasons:

You will learn things, and you will like it. The blog’s founder, Flexo (aka Luke Landes), is committed to developing “financially literate, capable, and successful human beings.” He’s a prolific writer who weighs in on just about every aspect of personal finance you could imagine — but always with a human touch. In other words, he knows what he’s talking about but he’s not a bloodless bean-counter. Over the years Flexo/Luke has developed quite a following of readers who weigh in with thoughtful (if occasionally snappish) commentary.

Which brings me to the second reason…

You can earn prizes. Once you’ve registered for an account, you get points for reading articles, leaving comments and sharing via social media. The points can be traded in for PF books and Amazon gift cards. (I’m saving up for a $100 card of my own.)

This giveaway will stretch over two weekends, with the drawing on Saturday, Nov. 19. That gives you maximum time to enroll but still delivers the goods in time for Cyber Week.

It’s important to keep in mind that not every deal during the BF/CM/CW time period represents the absolute best price of 2011. But in past years some of the loss leaders have been ridiculously cheap, so keep your eyes open. It helps to use a free app such as FatWallet’s Black Friday Deal Finder (which fortunately has an online counterpart for those of us without smartphones).

Finally: If you plan to do any shopping on Amazon this holiday season (or at any other time of the year), I’d like to ask that you consider using the widget here on the site. You can do this even if you aren’t buying the deal of the day or lightning deals. Go to the very top of the widget and click on the spot that says “Amazon.com” — you’ll be taken to a landing page to shop, and I’ll get a teeny-tiny kickback if you actually buy anything. Solvent bloggers are happy bloggers. Just sayin’.

To enter:

If you do any (or all!) of these things, please leave separate, additional comments to get credit for each entry.

The deadline is 5 p.m. PDT Saturday, Nov. 19.

  3. Fingers crossed. BTW, I’m one of the ones pre-Halloween that run through the store, hand up as a blinder, screaming “Eek!” while walking by the Christmas merchandise. 🙂

  8. I dunno, though…I almost think I would rather spend Black Friday reading Christmas stories and drinking hot coffee with the Husband. (Although fighting through the crowd at midnight Thursday at WallyMart is always worthwhile for the armload of $1.96 videos you can get…)
