Ever thrown away a half-used food product because, well, you never got around to using it? So has 77% of the population, according to a survey done for the J.M. Smucker Company.
Don’t toss it, repurpose it – particularly if it’s a Hungry Jack brand item. The “Use Up the Box” contest will award a year’s worth of groceries to the best recipes that use the company’s instant mashed potatoes, pancake mix or syrup. Two caveats:
- Your recipe must use at least one cup of Hungry Jack instant mashed potatoes or pancake mix, or at least ¼ cup of Hungry Jack syrup.
- Your recipe cannot be “Doughnut Bites With Bacon Sugar,” because that’s already been done.
I am not making that up. I couldn’t make that up. You have celebrity chef Adam Gertler to thank for the notion of mixing sinkers and side meat.
(Dang, those sound good.)
Gertler, who hosts “Kid in a Candy Store” on the Food Network, also came up with recipes like “Chicken Wings With Sweet Chili Glaze” (guess what makes that glaze sweet?) and Spiced Mocha Fudge Cake (which, believe it or not, contains mashed-potato flakes).
Think you can do better? Go to the contest web site and enter before Dec. 17. Incidentally, the year’s worth of gratis grub will actually be awarded in the form of a $6,000 check.
Now: Who’s up for creating a recipe that uses all three ingredients?

Have a great weekend!
In today’s NY Times magazine, there’s a recipe for making a kind of Frenchified answer to home-made potato chips using Hungry Jack potato flakes. Moi, not interested in ripping off someone else’s recipe, but thought folks might get a kick out of it. The things actually look pretty tasty!
