You know you’ve arrived when The Motley Fool casts a bobblehead in your likeness.
My daughter says it just cements my street cred. My partner considers it very cool, although he thinks I should have been wearing one of my “Money Nerds Unite” T-shirts from the Financial Blogger Conference*.
I just think it’s funny as hell, especially since they even put a teeny-tiny copy of my second book in its li’l plastic hand.
The Motley Fool is a private financial/investing advice company. One of its sites, All-Star Money, is a daily digest of personal finance articles that resonate with the curators. I’m happy to have been noticed three times thus far.
One of those notices – “Extreme frugality: Be a frugalvore” – took me to the pinnacle of All-Star Money: being chosen as the Article of the Week. One of the honors accorded thereto is having a bobblehead made. These guys know how to party.
This is a one-of-a-kind item, incidentally. People can’t order them individually, or collect the whole set. Just a fun souvenir.
Bobblehead surveillance
Currently the motion-style effigy is sitting (well, standing) on a bookshelf in my office. Sooner or later my partner’s grandchildren will come in here to play and notice the item. When they want to know what it is I, will ask, “What do you think it is?”
If they respond, “It’s you! Are you famous now?” then they’ll definitely have said the right thing.
If they say, “Eeewww, it’s creeeeepy, and it looks like you!” – well, I guess I asked for it.
To be honest, at some point I will likely turn the mini-doppelganger to face the back of the bookcase. It really is a bit creepy to be watched by a likeness. Even if she can let me know an earthquake is on the way.
Readers: Ever had a bobblehead made? Or a make-believe baseball card**? Or a fake Time magazine cover?
*It’s in Austin this year. Any readers from Texas want to say hi in person? Perhaps we could do a meet-up.
**I’ve got one of those somewhere, too. The Plutus Awards made a bunch of blogger cards up a few years back and distributed them at FinCon.
One of a kind? Shoot! First thing that popped into my mind: I need to buy one for Becky B! (Who’s also a fan)
I couldn’t think of a better writer to have their very own doppelgänger! Congrats!
This is awesome…Congrats!!!
How fun! Congrats 🙂
That is SO good!!! Love it!
I forget what dates you said the conference was, but I would love to drive down and meet up if the timing works.
It’s Sept. 22-24. It would be great fun to catch up.
How cool! Love it.
So cool…and it really does look like you! To have it on a shelf in your Alaska home is a great idea as an earthquake warning system. You might even scale her movements:
Trembling chin: Tremor
Nod of the head: small quake
Emphatic NO!: Get under a table
Whole bobblehead doll dancing: Uh-oh…
That is the cutest and coolest bobblehead ever! Congratulations!
Very cool, Donna. Congratulations!!!
Christine’s scale of the bobblehead’s earthquake warning indications are an absolute hoot! That use alone will make it worth dusting.
I think you should attach it to the dashboard in your vehicle.
That’s exactly what DF said!
Yes, Donna, this is unquestionable proof that you’ve made it! ;o) Congrats!
Awesome bobblehead. I’m in Texas. It’d be crazy to meet you but crazy in good way. Congratulations in that excellent bobblehead. It’s so cool.
But are you near Austin? I know that Texans (like Alaskans) have a unique definition of “near,” but it would be great to have a meet-up. A woman who posts here as “FrugalStrong” is also talking about coming there.
Wow, I like “frugal strong” wish I’d thought of that. Lol….
Yeah nearby is relative on Texas but I can do Austin. It’s a long drive but everything is in Texas. Plus Austin is Austin.
E-mail me a little closer to early September and maybe you and FrugalStrong (and others?) can find a day that works best.
Excellent. 👍🏻🤠
So cool about the bobblehead! You could also use it ala Suze Orman to ask if you can afford something or not. I just don’t know how to get it shaking to get the best answer without an earthquake. Perhaps outrageous laughter?
