At FinCon – and this year it’s MY turn to be sick.

At last year’s FinCon, my daughter became seriously ill and wound up hospitalized. This year it’s my turn.

Not to be hospitalized, I hope, but to be sick. On Monday night I came down with the same bug that DF had just before it was time to leave for FinCon in Dallas. Spent a big chunk of Tuesday* at one of those doc-in-the-box places and then picking up three prescriptions and some food for the room.

Slept from about 4:30 to 11:30 p.m. yesterday, got up to take the last of the day’s meds and went right back under. Today I did something I haven’t done since, well, forever: I stayed in bed for the entire day. It felt weird, but I have to admit that it’s helping.

The three prescriptions probably also had a hand in my improvement. The fever and pounding headache are gone, I haven’t retched in 24 hours, and while I’m still barking like a seal the cough is what my physician terms “productive.” (Eeewww.)

All of which is a roundabout way of saying: I really, really hope to be well enough – and non-contagious enough – to do a Dallas reader meet-up.

If it happens it would take place around 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the McDonald’s restaurant, 700 N. Pearl St. As usual I chose a fast food restaurant rather than a bar because:

  • I’m not a drinking woman,
  • This place is close to the FinCon hotel, and
  • It’s the frugal choice – you can get a coffee or soft drink and hang around to chat.

Note that this day and time is tentative. If it’s to happen, I’ll post something on Friday or on Saturday morning, if I get swept up in the usual FinCon insanity and lose track of days time.

*Millones de gracias to my gracious Texas hosts, about whom I wrote in the post “Why aren’t more people frugal?” They’re the kind of people who mean it when they say, “If you ever come to Fort Worth, please stay with us!” Also the kind of people who drive you to the doctor, then to pick up prescriptions and food, then to your conference hotel. Can’t wait for them to journey back up to Alaska, so DF and I can smoke them a big ol’ salmon.

  1. Oh, wish I was near Dallas. Rest up. My husband really believes in taking to his bed for an entire day when he gets something. Swears by it.

  2. You are most welcome and I’m glad we could be there in your time of need. And thank you for spending my birthday with me, tooling around Fort Worth, eating BBQ & fried chicken, watching my kids perform in the backyard, and for the lovely hostess gifts. You, dear Donna, are “good people.”

  3. Oh, no! I guess it’s your turn to be sick at FinCon. Sorry about the lousy timing. Yes, I agree with Susan’s husband, spending a day or two in bed is really good for things like this.

  4. It is wonderful that you are at a place in your life where you can stay in bed all day. I can relate to the strangeness of bed rest. I had a doctor tell me to do that years ago, and all I could think is, I’m a single mom with a 9 year old, are you clueless?

Drink some hot decaf beverages and get well quickly.

  5. Hope you are much better by now. It sure is a bitch when you are ailing with something. I am lucky not to have had the flu in years, but I try and be extra careful and stay away from too many stores, etc. when I hear it is in the area. I got my flu shot, and knock on my wooden head, that it keeps up. I live 45 miles from Hbg, pa, so if you are ever in that area, you can gladly stay with me.

    • Thanks. The virus seems to have invited a head cold over to play, but fortunately the two flights home were uneventful. I was even able to sleep part of the time, when I wasn’t coughing. (Clapped a folded handkerchief over my mouth every time, to give fellow travelers such muffling as I could.)

Right now I’m propped up in the easy chair with lots of tea nearby, going through all the e-mails I missed and heading, carefully, back into deadline territory. I think bedtime will be at 8 p.m.
