Giveaway: $25 Amazon card.

A lot is going on right now (99 percent of it positive), which means my AWOL-ness* has continued. Why not start 2026 with a giveaway? This time it’s a $25 Amazon gift card that’s up for grabs.

A lot of people find January a tough month financially. The bills for holiday spending (even modest spending) are showing up, and homeowners in colder places need to spend more for heating. (One Anchorage woman posted that her gas bill doubled due to a stretch of below-zero days.)

An extra $25 in spending power isn’t much in the grand scheme of things. But it’s $25 you didn’t have yesterday.

Maybe you budgeted perfectly for the holidays (or don’t celebrate them) and therefore aren’t in debt. In that case, I have some frugal suggestions for the card:

Sell it. A friend or co-worker might want it (especially if you give them a $5 discount), or you could try one of those gift card reselling sites.

Regift it. These codes don’t expire. Give it as a birthday, holiday or just-because gift.

Donate it. Give it to a nonprofit group to use as a door prize, or for buying needed items. You get to help others without affecting your own budget.

Use it to donate. Send baby items or shampoo to the family shelter. Have $25 worth of dog or cat toys delivered to the pet rescue in your town. Order an herbal tea assortment for the senior center. If you aren’t an Amazon Prime member, maybe a friend is and will order the items for you. (Disclosure: As an Amazon affiliate, I will receive a small fee to those who join using my link.)

Treat yourself. Sometimes people who are frugal and/or on a careful budget neglect themselves. While $25 isn’t a princely sum these days, it could purchase you the higher-end lotion or chocolate of your dreams. Live a little!

  1. Unfortunately, in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where I reside, about 99% of what is going on right now is negative. Residents are genuinely terrified. My daughter just took groceries to a family who is fearful of leaving their home. If I were to win the GC, it would go to my daughter to use for groceries for those sheltering in place. Thank you for the thoughtful giveaway, Donna. I follow via email.

    • Sigh. I don’t need $25 but I do need some happy, positive news because right now, it all seems pretty bad.

I am happy that Renee Good’s family have been given $1.5 million via GoFundMe and are refusing more donations now. There are good people in the world.

      • May I also just say, Donna, that I have been following you since your first MSN Money post and statements like this: “An extra $25 in spending power isn’t much in the grand scheme of things. But it’s $25 you didn’t have yesterday.” make me happy. You’re real. You get it.

  4. I’ve also been following you since MSN Money.

I budgeted for the holidays, but the surprise of a burst pipe this past week is going to cost umpteen thousand dollars with insurance. I’m thankful to have an emergency fund, but I fear it will wipe out the funds. I’m trudging through and will do a reset on my budget. Best case, I’ll be rebuilding the emwrgency fund. Worst case, I’ll balance paying down new debt from the mess & rebuilding the emergency fund in some sort of balancing act.

Whenever I’ve had smaller amount gift cards and my budget has allowed me to save it I have tried to pass on some help. I’ve held them and often use them when I know someone’s struggling, or for a friend’s child who needs to return to school and could use some extra gas money, and I keep one in my wallet for that time when you know someone needs help.
