Giveaway: $30 Netflix gift card.

In this unusually hot summer weather, it can be hard to muster the enthusiasm to do, well, anything.

Hikes? Sure, if you want to drown in your own sweat. Visit to the community pool? Loud and crowded. Gardening? Early morning hours only, please, lest you dry up along with those bean vines that are fading despite regular irrigation.

Proximity to air conditioning is ideal. If you don’t have AC, then spritz yourself with ice water and sit down close to the fan with “Anna Karenina,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “The Grapes of Wrath” or any other Great Work you’d been meaning to read since forever.

And if you don’t have a reading list, or if you’ve read yourself blurry-eyed and can no longer face the printed page? Go ahead. Give in. Turn on the television. Let art, or something quite like it, just wash over you while you drink iced tea by the gallon and subsist on cold melon slices and bowls of sherbet.

Full disclosure: I don’t own a television, but looking at what’s available on Netflix almost makes me want to buy one. Some of these are shows I’ve seen and would like to see again, such as:

“Jane the Virgin” (a gleefully over-the-top comedy that as telenovela-ish as the favorite viewing material of its heroine)

“Schitt’s Creek” (which starts slowly and annoyingly, but all I can say is: Give it time! I didn’t like it much for the first couple of episodes!)

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (which had some of the funniest song-and-dance numbers I’ve ever seen)

“The Good Place” (you gotta respect a show that had philosophy scholars advising the writing staff).

Then there’s the stuff I’ve heard lots of buzz about, including but not limited to “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Better Call Saul,” “BoJack Horseman,” “Grace and Frankie,” “Pose” and “One Day At A Time.”

Again: Almost makes a girl want to buy a TV to hang on the wall. Not just yet, though. But maybe one of you could use this gift card, either to pay for your own celluloid dreams, to give as a gift or, heck, to sell for a few extra bucks.

    I adore your column/pieces/posts and have been following you for years (back in MSN Money days). The ‘years’ part will help explain this request. Could you please consider making the font bigger in the emails you send out?

    When I am on my computer it is simple to resize, but when I am on my phone, in particular, they are challenging to read.

  52. Thanks for offering the give-away. I have watched a few of the shows you mentioned. Really liked our neighborhood “ladies viewing night” where we binge on Grace and Frankie, and The Good Place.
