Giveaway: Artisan felted mittens from Alaska.

Happy New Year, belatedly, and time for another “support the Alaska economy” giveaway. This time around, the winner gets to pick from among six pairs of artisan felted mittens.

Given how cold it is in so many places right now, who’s up for some wearable art?

These mittens are outstanding: both beautiful and practical. They’re funky-stylish outside and unbelievably soft and cozy inside.

The artist who makes them, Sherri Stein, is a retiree who spends part of the year Outside* and part of the year in Alaska. She rescues wool sweaters from secondhand shops and felts them until they’re soft and super-warm, then turns them into mittens with deep cuffs and interesting buttons.

Her color choices are whimsical. But as DF points out, they’re also practical: “If you lose one of these, you’ll be able to find it in the snow.”

The winner can choose from among six pairs, one of which is pictured at top left. Here are the other five options:

I shall wear purple!

Those of you who know the poem “Warning,” by Jenny Joseph, will understand the reference.

Or maybe this shade of purple

I like the way the purple tops and blue palms dance together. Also: Argyle!

For more subdued tastes

This pair is a bit larger, and would be good for a guy. Or for those who have what the lead character in “Archer” calls “freakishly huge hands.” (Not really.)

Also for a neutral palette

These are also a bit larger. And not to say that all men hate bright colors, because I know that’s not true, but these would be a good bet for many guys. Or for women who prefer a more subtle approach to staving off frostbite. Or for nonbinary folk who appreciate a tweedier look.

For individualists only

Yep, these are mismatched. On purpose. Consider it a fashion statement. Besides, when someone notices that they don’t match, you get to say, “Yeah, and I got a pair just like them at home.”

How to win warmer hands

To throw your virtual hat into the virtual ring, do one or more of the following:

Be sure to leave a separate comment for each entry (e.g., “Subscribed via e-mail” or “Follow you on Twitter”).

Incidentally: If you see a pair of mittens that you simply must have, e-mail me. Unless the giveaway winner chooses the ones you want, I will make it happen.

The deadline for entering is 6 p.m. PST Wednesday, Jan. 19. If I don’t hear back from the winner by 6 p.m. PST Thursday, Jan. 20, I’ll have the random number generator select a new name.

Note: Due to the high cost of international shipping, this giveaway is limited to U.S. residents.

*As regular readers know, “Outside” is what Alaskans call the rest of the continental United States. That is, when we’re not calling it “The Lower 48,” “the South 48” or “the States.”

  3. I will give you that Alaska has bragging rights when it comes to COLD but we here in MN are not terribly far behind. Those mittens could definitely be put to good use. Thank you for the timely giveaway, Donna. I receive your emails.

  4. They are beautiful, and how nice she is recycling a natural product.
I have no interest in them, as severely allergic to wool, BUT – thanks for sponsoring the contest for those who can wear them and supporting a local artist, or any artist.

  5. Love the neutrals. I am back to wearing mittens and gloves because a couple of my fingers are going numb in the cold. Annoying. These are very pretty.
