Giveaway: “Tundra” calendar.

Continuing with my “support the local economy” string of giveaways, I give you…a wall calendar made by Alaska’s funniest guy – and signed by him, too. If you squint real hard at the photo on the left, you’ll see the signature “Chad Carpenter” in silver Sharpie at the top, just above the “Tundra” logo.

Carpenter is the artist responsible for the popular “Tundra” strip, which he modestly describes as “Nature’s favorite comic.” It’s a lot of people’s favorite comic: “Tundra” is syndicated in hundreds of newspapers in the United States, Canada, Europe, Jamaica and Trinidad. At times I wonder whether jokes about snowmen are as hilarious in Kingston, Jamaica as they are in Kingston, Ontario, but I guess humor is universal.

The artist and his brother are also responsible (and I mean that in the legal as well as the ownership sense of the word) for two movies set in Alaska, both of which I’ve also given away:  “Sudsy Slim Rides Again” and “Moose: The Movie.” As noted, I do like supporting the local economy, so why not export a little bit of northern lunacy whenever I get the chance?

Which brings us back to the “Tundra” calendars. If you or someone you know likes silly stuff, then why not start the new year with a new calendar? Although some of Carpenter’s best humor is low, there’s a sly streak of sophistication in many of his comic strips. There’s a reason his art is enjoyed in so many places: The man is clever.
