It’s still snowing here in Seward’s Icebox, but I have an escape hatch: Phoenix, Arizona, where my daughter lives. At this time of year, Phoenix is a wondrous place, with sidewalks you can see and thus no need to wear cleats on your shoes. Also, you don’t have to shovel sunlight.
Which is why I’m heading there next week. Anyone interested in a meet-up?
I plan to take a walk every day to get out of my daughter’s hair, so would be glad to meet for coffee or a snack as long as it’s within walking distance. That pretty much limits us to Wendy’s, Barro’s Pizza or Lucky Doughnuts. I see no issue with that.
Those who don’t (or can’t) do junk food might manage with a lemonade or a fruit juice, plus maybe a baked potato to keep up their strength.
I’m also planning to be at a Wendy’s from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23, if anyone wants to join me. Look for the late-middle-aged nerd with a laptop.
What will we talk about?
Anything you like, within reason. Living intentionally, money, frugality, midlife reinvention, or whatever comes up. I am also one of those weirdos who likes looking at pictures of people’s kids, grandkids or pets. (Or all three.)
I’ve had these meet-ups before and they always wind up being great conversations. Sometimes I’ve gotten ideas for future posts, which lets me share what I’ve learned from readers.
There’s another fun result, too: I get to meet people who until then had been my imaginary friends. It’s always fun to put a face to a username.
The Wendy’s in question is at 2640 W. Thunderbird Road. In the past they’ve been very tolerant about me bringing in my laptop to work for an hour or more. Sometimes lots more. As I said, I like to get out of Abby’s hair for a while, and it’s easier to meet a deadline at Wendy’s because Abby’s cat isn’t there, being all adorable and demanding attention.
Naturally, I always buy something to eat. I’m not a wifi-stealing monster. But there’s a frugal hack for that, too: Seniors can get a free soft drink with purchase. It’s cheaper to buy a baked potato than a soda, and this way I get both. Those “value menu” deals are worth a look, too.
Hope to see any locals next Saturday, for snacks and chat. If you want to schedule a baked potato/pizza/doughnut meet-up on another day, drop me a line at SurvivingAndThriving (at) live (dot) com. I will be available from March 20 until March 28.
Have fun in the sun!
Alas, I won’t be any nearer Phoenix than my present location in Central NY–which, BTW, is not too far from the beautifully preserved home of William Seward of Icebox fame. Should you ever be in the neighborhood, stop by and pay me and Will a visit. (And if you time the visit right, you can also attend the Millard Fillmore Bathtub Race, in honor of the president who installed the first bathtub in the White House!)
Have fun! Wish I was in the area. Sending positive thoughts from Florida. Enjoy your visit.
Not so much snow here in New England this winter but still lots of bone chilling wind and cold. Would love to meet up with you but alas I am stick here for now. However if you are ever in Boston….or our old stomping ground of Philadelphia…and Alaska is STILL on my bucket list!!!
It’s a date.
I’ll be in Anchorage on May 28! A friend and I are flying in to join a cruise the next day, after spending 2 weeks travelling around Canada.
This trip will be ticking off my 7th continent – something I never thought a single Mum from Australia would ever be able to say.
Got time for a coffee? If so, I could pick you up at the airport.
I hope you are having a wonderful time.
Hope you also try the Big Bag Special at Wendy’s.
Big Bag Special, you say….? I will trust but also verify.
