‘Your Playbook For Tough Times, Vol. 2’ is here!

Self-publishing is something like childbirth: Toward the end of the process you’re swearing you will never, EVER do this again. You’re also looking for someone to punch in the mouth for not being supportive enough* (anyone who’s ever been in the transition phase of labor will likely back me up on that).

I felt that way toward the finishing-up portion of “Your Playbook For Tough Times: Living Large On Small Change, For The Short Term Or The Long Haul.” When I wasn’t gnashing my teeth and rending my garments I was thinking Lord please get me through it…I swear I’ll be a good girl and stay away from JPEGs after this.

Just as with childbirth, I forgot the pain almost immediately and decided to do it again. This time around the damn thing was practically breech, a self-publishing project that came out feet-first and sideways. For the past 10 days or so I’ve been whirling and howling with regard to final edits, formatting and cover design. On Tuesday night I was absolutely unhinged with cumulative rage and frustration as another formatting snafu erupted.

But you know what? I’m sort of forgetting how that felt, now that “Your Playbook For Tough Times, Vol. 2: Needs And Wants Edition” has made it into the world.

Like its predecessor, the new book is designed to help people live their best lives on the money they have. That means getting some – or maybe all – of what they want in addition to everyday essentials.

It offers solid, actionable advice, resources and encouragement. Readers will take away specific tactics to slash the cost of things like food, education, insurance, home repair, birthdays, transportation, weddings, pet care, decorating, holidays and even funerals.

Also like its predecessor, the new “Playbook” is designed to help three groups of people:

  • Those already in tough times (job loss, illness, et al.)
  • Those anticipating tough times (e.g., layoffs in the industry or the company)
  • Those who want to live lean to realize a dream such as entrepreneurship, at-home parenthood, early retirement or homeownership (your dreams may vary)

“Your Playbook For Tough Times, Vol. 2: Wants And Needs Edition” is available in paperback on Amazon and also on the CreateSpace E-Store (which pays me a slightly higher royalty – just sayin’), and as a Kindle book ($9.49 and $7.99, respectively).

Or purchase an e-version (PDF) for $6.99 through (using PayPal or credit card). Note: Make sure you’re ordering the current version, as the original is also for sale through that link. (That is, unless you want to buy both.)

How to buy it with a coupon

Those who signed up for my (very) occasional “Playbook” e-mail newsletter will be receiving a discount code good for $1.99 off the e-book. Thanks, folks, and your e-mail should hit your inboxes any second.

If you’re not on the list and would like to be, please let me know in the comments section. I’ll use the e-mail address attached to your comment unless you tell me otherwise. You can ask to be removed from the newsletter later if you like, but I promise not to spam you (see below). I may, however, send out another coupon code later this summer.

Interested in buying that discounted e-book, or a signed copy of the paperback, as a gift for someone else? (Hint: Both the graduation and wedding seasons are upon us.) Contact me at SurvivingAndThriving (at) live (dot) com and we’ll work something out.

If you like the book, pretty please leave a short review on its Amazon landing page. This doesn’t have to be a dissertation; just a couple of sentences about what you found useful about the book and how it helped you/might help others. So many personal finance books exist that potential buyers can feel bewildered, and seeing feedback from readers can lead one to buy (or not waste money on) a book that is not appropriate to the situation.

It also helps get one’s book noticed: I’ve heard that 50 reviews is the number that makes Amazon more likely to promote a work. The previous book has 26 reviews (still not too late to give your opinion!), and I’d love to surpass that.

About that “very” occasional newsletter: You probably won’t hear from me again until I start getting closer to the completion of the next book. Yes, the birth pains really are receding that quickly. Stay tuned.

*Except that everyone has been wonderfully kind, from readers to IRL friends to my wonderful partner. DF deserves props for supporting me both physically (while I sniveled) and emotionally during my Tuesday-night meltdown. I also owe him my thanks for bringing home not one but two kinds of ice cream on Wednesday – both of which, of course, were on sale. Can’t help lovin’ that man.

  2. SO excited about this new book, Donna! Congratulations!

I’ll be receiving the paperback version on Monday thanks to Amazon Prime. So glad I have the day off to read it. 🙂

    • It’ll be about food and all the frugal hacks thereof — the reasonably simple ones, that is. I’m not going to suggest people raise pigs and slaughter them at home, or grow their own wheat and thresh it.

      Thanks for your good wishes.

  3. Donna, I’d love to be on your list! Your Surviving and Thriving column helped me survive the Great Recession, emotionally as well as financially, and I was really upset when MSN decided to axe it. I finally got that great paying job only to find out it was a living nightmare. So I’m in between opportunities and looking forward to reading both your books!

    • So glad I could help! That was a tough time for a lot of people. (And yeah, I wasn’t exactly thrilled myself when MSN Money decided to fire us all.)

Sorry to hear that your job was not what it seemed, and I hope the books will help you navigate yet another rough patch.

I’ve added you to the list and sent discount codes for both books. Thanks for your interest.

    • Sending it now. Your e-mail did pop up as an autofill, so perhaps the previous note got stuck in spam…?

Watch for this one. The message field says “info you requested.”

Sorry about the hassle, and thanks for following up.
