Another shot at the “Tundra” calendar.

IMG_20150503_130130A couple of weeks back I gave away a 2016 calendar created by “Tundra” artist Chad Carpenter. Or would have, if the winner hadn’t been from Canada.

Not that I have anything against our brethren to the north (or, in my case, to the east). It’s just that mailing the calendar would have been ridiculously expensive.

That’s why I note that winners from outside the United States will receive a gift card instead of mailable items. In this case, I sent the reader a $15 Amazon.ca card.

Which means, of course, that the calendar is still up for grabs. So is a $50 gift card of your choice from the Swagbucks shop. But first things first.

Giveaway: Two AMC movie tickets.

th-1The Academy Awards have come and gone. Seen the prize-winners yet?

The summer movie season is nearly here. Got your must-see list going? (I’m looking at you, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Might even spring for a midnight screening.)

Ticket prices are a bummer, but I can help. That is, I can help if you live near an AMC theater and win this week’s giveaway. I can even offer you something to drink.

Who wants a free movie ticket?

thThe last movie-based giveaway drew 135 entries. That shouldn’t have surprised me, because relatively few people would turn down a free movie ticket. I’d like to win a free movie ticket myself.

But this week it’s your turn, not mine. The giveaway prize is a $10 card to AMC Theatres.

Think of it: At least one (and maybe more than one) movie you don’t have to pay to see. Just swipe that card and enter your local palace of dreams.

Let’s go to the movies.

th-1The Academy Awards are approaching. How many of the likely-to-be-nominated flicks have you seen?

It’s a little scary how expensive a movie ticket has gotten, yet for some films there’s just nothing like the big screen. This week’s giveaway will give you a head start.

If you win, you’ll get your choice of either a $10 Fandango gift card or a $10 AMC Theatres gift card. That should cover (or nearly cover) the cost of a nighttime screening. Skip the popcorn and go to a matinee or a second-run house and the scrip could pay for two films.

The Black Friday 2014 giveaway.

thSome people think Black Friday is fading away. Me, I think it’s simply spreading out.

Gray Thursday, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are on the way whether you like it or not — and you can bet that Saturday and Sunday will have their own forms of deal-mongering, too.

Don’t want to shop on Thanksgiving or Black Friday? Prefer to buy locally? Do what works for you. But this week’s giveaway is designed to provide a little help for shoppers of all stripes, plus a little entertainment afterwards.

Up for grabs are:

Go to the movies on me.

thSummer blockbusters mean lots of things: excitement, drama, peril, animation, pratfalls, talking animals, jokes about body parts.

They also mean a nice break from reality in a dark and air-conditioned room. In some areas of the country that’s a really welcome respite.

But given that the average cost of a movie ticket is more than $8, movies can put a hurt on the budget.

That’s why this week’s giveaway is a $10 Fandango gift card.

Dinner and a movie? It’s on me.

thThe recently released film “The Kings of Summer” concerns a trio of teen-aged males who run away from home. They don’t run far, mind you — just a mile or so away, where they propose to build a cabin in the woods and live off the land and out from under their parents’ thumbs.

Not that they’re particularly good at this. The chicken they eat for dinner comes from a nearby Boston Market and their cabin is slapped together with pilfered materials.

But it’s their place, their escape from what they see as the impossible oppression they suffer in the outside world.

“These are not the sophisticated ‘Gossip Girl’ teenagers but gawky innocents desperate to grow up and prove self-sufficiency. We’ve all been there,” notes New York Times film reviewer Stephen Holden.

This week’s giveaway is a pair of gift cards suggested by the film: a $10 card for the AMC Theatres movie chain and a $10 Boston Market card. Of course, you can use the movie card to see any movie you like, not just “The Kings of Summer.”

Want to see the summer blockbusters? I can help.

thLast night I hit the midnight movie with my friend Linda B., who agrees with me that there’s no sense seeing “Iron Man 3” during the day when we’re well-rested.

There’s just something fun about being there at 12:01 a.m. the day it opens, especially for a popcorner like this one.

I hope to see a lot of other movies this year, with Linda or with my niece and her boys. Maybe you want to go to the movies, too, but are horripilated by the price of the tickets.

I can help: This week I’m giving away two $15 gift cards to Regal Cinemas.

The importance of midnight movies.

Popcorn © by TinyTall

I went to a 12:02 a.m. screening of “Prometheus,” one of the most unsettling films I’ve seen in a long time. Not horror-movie scary, sci-fi-movie creepy. It left me so jittery that when we got home at about 2:45 a.m. I couldn’t go right to sleep.

Instead I added video codes to today’s MSN Money post, cleaned up my e-mail inbox and finished tidying the scene of an earlier kitchen mishap involving overboiled blueberries (apparently I have something against my friend’s stove).

It was 4 a.m. before I finally went to bed, which probably isn’t the healthiest sleep habit. The kettle corn consumed at the theater wasn’t so smart, either, no matter how much I try to convince myself that popcorn = corn = daily vegetable intake.

But damn, it was fun. My friend’s got me hooked on midnight screenings. We’ve seen five since I got here.
