Giveaway: “The Prepper’s Pocket Guide.”

If I’d been thinking clearly last week, this would have been the Aug. 26 giveaway. But Irene (or the threat of Irene, anyway) had me making enormous changes at the last minute.

The good news: This book will help you prepare for the next looming disaster, whether natural or man-made.

Also included, courtesy of the author, is a very unusual lagniappe.

The Prepper’s Pocket Guide: 101 Easy Things You Can Do to Ready Your Home For a Disaster” was written by Bernie Carr, who created The Apartment Prepper’s Blog. As the name of her website indicates, she specializes in self-sufficiency in tight spaces.

And on tight budgets. When I interviewed her for an MSN Money column called “Survive a disaster — in your condo,” Carr noted that it need not cost much to prepare for an earthquake, winter storm, blackout or hurricane.

Here’s the fun part: Carr makes bracelets out of paracord, a lightweight but super-strong nylon cord. In a pinch, these bracelets could be unraveled and used all kinds of ways.

It’s cute, too:

Survival in a wristlet!

Carr has kindly offered to donate a bracelet to go with the book. The winner of this week’s two-part giveaway will need to be patient, though. Not only will I not be home to mail the book the third week in September, the author will be custom-making your bracelet.

Guys: Don’t let a little thing like jewelry keep you from entering this giveaway. It would make a nice gift for the special someone in your life. Nothing says “I love you” like an accessory that could theoretically carry 550 pounds worth of gear.

To enter:

If you do any (or all!) of these things, please leave separate, additional comments to get credit for each entry.

The deadline is 9 p.m. PDT on Monday, Sept. 5.

  1. New York could have used this info before the hurricane. Guys survival gear makes bracelets for men and women, so feel free to enter, a bracelet can be manly.

  2. I was evacuated Wednesday from my home on a beautiful, dry, calm day. (on my blog) Yet, I still was not prepared! Every prepping situation is different. I am going to get the hang of this if life keeps handing me these emergencies! The April tornado was almost better/easier than the gas leak in the neighborhood. I would love the book and bracelet!

  3. Okay, that’s the second time this week I’ve seen a bracket like that. I think the interweb elves are trying to tell me something 🙂

I’ve never been evacuated, but have weathered my share of power outages. This is one reason why a wood stove is going in (hopefully) this year!

  4. Never too late to prepare for a hurricane! I had a tornado go up my street in April–still no clue as to who owned the lovely leather couch deposited in my pasture, three years of drought (I have a dairy goat farm), the winds from Irene knocked out power for 8 hours…..lightening storm the next day…now we are battening down the hatches for the next set of hurricanes. Life is never dull!

  5. I am already subscribed – I love reading your blog. We weathered Irene pretty well. We lost power for about a day and half. We did really well. The one big thing we learned is that our main toilet takes 4.5 gals/flush. Yikes that was a lot of water to haul from our rain barrel. Love the bracelet!

  6. The book sounds like a good read. We’ve been without power in the past for up to 9 days and preparation certainly makes it easier.

  7. I already used the ideas from your MSN column to stock up before Irene. Even though, thankfully, I did not need to use my supplies, the peace of mind from knowing I was prepared was priceless.

So I would like to have the handbook and the bracelet!
