If I’d been thinking clearly last week, this would have been the Aug. 26 giveaway. But Irene (or the threat of Irene, anyway) had me making enormous changes at the last minute.
The good news: This book will help you prepare for the next looming disaster, whether natural or man-made.
Also included, courtesy of the author, is a very unusual lagniappe.
“The Prepper’s Pocket Guide: 101 Easy Things You Can Do to Ready Your Home For a Disaster” was written by Bernie Carr, who created The Apartment Prepper’s Blog. As the name of her website indicates, she specializes in self-sufficiency in tight spaces.
And on tight budgets. When I interviewed her for an MSN Money column called “Survive a disaster — in your condo,” Carr noted that it need not cost much to prepare for an earthquake, winter storm, blackout or hurricane.
Here’s the fun part: Carr makes bracelets out of paracord, a lightweight but super-strong nylon cord. In a pinch, these bracelets could be unraveled and used all kinds of ways.
It’s cute, too:

Carr has kindly offered to donate a bracelet to go with the book. The winner of this week’s two-part giveaway will need to be patient, though. Not only will I not be home to mail the book the third week in September, the author will be custom-making your bracelet.
Guys: Don’t let a little thing like jewelry keep you from entering this giveaway. It would make a nice gift for the special someone in your life. Nothing says “I love you” like an accessory that could theoretically carry 550 pounds worth of gear.

New York could have used this info before the hurricane. Guys survival gear makes bracelets for men and women, so feel free to enter, a bracelet can be manly.
Sounds like worthwhile reading to me. with a bonus!
Facebook too.
That’s funny you’re offering that type of bracelet. My bf’s friend made him one just recently.

I was evacuated Wednesday from my home on a beautiful, dry, calm day. (on my blog) Yet, I still was not prepared! Every prepping situation is different. I am going to get the hang of this if life keeps handing me these emergencies! The April tornado was almost better/easier than the gas leak in the neighborhood. I would love the book and bracelet!
I follow via email. Does she tell what to do with the chickens? And, dinner in the oven? And, the order to get out NOW?
Okay, that’s the second time this week I’ve seen a bracket like that. I think the interweb elves are trying to tell me something 🙂
I’ve never been evacuated, but have weathered my share of power outages. This is one reason why a wood stove is going in (hopefully) this year!
Love you blog and articles !!! Subscribe via e-mail . would love to win : )
Sounds like an interesting read. After my experience with Irene I’d love to feel better prepared for emergencies.

Bring it on before the next storm…hurricane season lasts until Nov. 1.
I am enlightened by yours and entertained by your daughter’s “I Pick up Pennies” via email.
love getting this by email! thanks! (also follow on facebook!)
Never too late to prepare for a hurricane! I had a tornado go up my street in April–still no clue as to who owned the lovely leather couch deposited in my pasture, three years of drought (I have a dairy goat farm), the winds from Irene knocked out power for 8 hours…..lightening storm the next day…now we are battening down the hatches for the next set of hurricanes. Life is never dull!
love the bracelet! and would love to see the book too
and of course I subscribe via email – love your blog

Great idea – for piece of mind.
The bracelet is cute, and I subscribe via RSS.
I am already subscribed – I love reading your blog. We weathered Irene pretty well. We lost power for about a day and half. We did really well. The one big thing we learned is that our main toilet takes 4.5 gals/flush. Yikes that was a lot of water to haul from our rain barrel. Love the bracelet!
Thanks for having such a good blog. I like the idea of the bracelet. It is a reminder and a useful thing.
Also an e-mail subscriber.
Oh would love to win this! Just going to subscribe now.

The book sounds great and the bracelet would be perfect for my daughter who lives in a small apartment.
The book sounds like a good read. We’ve been without power in the past for up to 9 days and preparation certainly makes it easier.
I already used the ideas from your MSN column to stock up before Irene. Even though, thankfully, I did not need to use my supplies, the peace of mind from knowing I was prepared was priceless.
So I would like to have the handbook and the bracelet!
Would really like to win this!
The bracelet looks cool and incredibly useful. The book sounds like a great read.
I subscribe by e-mail and would like to win the book. My son moved to the mid-west and will experience weather for the first time in his life. I would give the book to him..
I’d love to read the book – and the bracelet sounds like something I need. (Do they come in purple? lol) Thanks so much for the giveaway!
